Small home makeover

Size doesn’t matter when it comes to making over your home. Great interior design can have a big impact on even the smallest of homes! This was certainly the case for a small home that we ‘made over’ in a bayside suburb of Melbourne. Our brief was to add some style and make the two bedroom unit “bright and happy”.

The base colour palette selected for this interior design project was grey and white. This worked with our client’s existing pieces, and also added the ‘classiness’ that was required. The secondary colour palette of oranges and blues adds warmth and happiness.

This was an interior design project that evolved over time, rather than being all done in one block. We were initially asked to provide advice on the bathroom, selecting floor and wall tiles, and choosing the wall lights. Next came some furniture and lamps for the bedroom, and finally bedlinen for the main bedroom, and a new look for the second bedroom and living room. An ‘evolving’ project is great option for those who want to take an easy first step in their home makeover, build some confidence, then move onto the rest of their home.

In a home without any notable architectural features, we selected bathroom tiles with texture and pattern to add interest to the bathroom. The beautiful wall lights by designer Ross Gardham have both functional and aesthetic qualities.

It is in the bedrooms that the “bright and happy” brief came to the fore. The second bedroom, often used by visiting grandchildren, combines happy terracotta colours with fun round velvet cushions. The main bedroom has a more sophisticated and restful feel with mirrored furniture and teal, black and white bedlinen. Classy combines with fun through the use of velvets, Hunting for George bedlinen, and Kip and Co’s throw with extra large tassels.

It was the living room that saw the largest change. A new sofa and entertainment unit with narrower dimensions than the existing furniture meant that there was more space within the small room. The cool grey colour palette makes the room feel classy and more spacious; of particular note is the large rug from Armadillo & Co. that helps to warm the room and provide a consistent base through which to incorporate existing furniture. Finally, the bone inlay coffee table, stunning mirror and embroidered cushions add textural interest, warmth and happiness into the room.
